Design Presentation

Design Presentation

The two design artifacts I have selected below are past and present logos from the MLB team the Texas Rangers.

Concepts of Design:

-Identity: These logos "sell" the entire brand of their baseball team. They are the heart and sole representation of the teams.

-Print: The distribution of these logos is everywhere. They can be seen on jerseys, hats, sports magazines, commercials, team apparel, and many others.

Poor Design:

- Rangers' old logo:

There's not really much going on in the logo. The blank outline of the hat and the ball is very bland and unappealing. The logo just doesn't really "pop" for me besides the name. I think the font of "Rangers" was poorly chosen, especially with the way the "g" looks, and the capitalized "R" and "S". Though it symmetrical, it looks a bit ridiculous and unnecessary. In this design we see pragnanz with the cowboy hat and the baseball. The basic outline and the weird form of the "Rangers" just doesn't cut it for a professional baseball team's logo.

Good Design:

- Rangers' current logo:

The current Rangers' logo, to me, is clearly the better logo. It has a professional look, with an American appeal with the red, white and blue colors that stand out much more than the old logo. I believe it's a logo that metaphorically represents all of baseball, meaning that the patriotic portrayal of it is supposed to represent America's pastime of baseball. The image of the baseball behind the "T" stands out and immediately appeals to the fan. The circular look gives it Gestalt principles of continuity as well as closure, being that it is tight and clear and easy to look at. The logo is one of my favorite in baseball because of its professional and American look.
